Priced at approximately $40,000 AUD, the Keysight ECal is a costly component in RF laboratories, crucial for calibrating network analyzers. The primary objective of this project was straightforward: safeguard the micro USB charge port from potential damage due to mishandling, with any additional protective features deemed advantageous.
The solution took a practical approach, utilizing a heavy-duty phone case as a basis and incorporating a cable strain relief feature for the charging cable. This addition ensures that forces applied to the cable do not impact the charge port, enhancing the overall durability of the unit.
The design provides comprehensive protection against bumps and scratches for the ECal unit while maintaining visibility of the front face through a clear polycarbonate cover, facilitating user interaction.
Crafted from machined POM plastic, flame-deburred for a clean surface, the design includes a clear polycarbonate cover attached to the top cover using cyanoacrylate. The assembly is secured with M4 screws, offering a practical and efficient solution to protect this valuable lab equipment.
