Very grateful to have designed this awesome retirement gift for a colleague, Dean. After much deliberation, it was decided that we would fit the hardware from an existing Bluetooth speaker into a new housing, utilising existing plastic covers from the Kaelus iVA product.
After disassembling and CADing up the existing components, I designed up the housing and related components to ensure everything fit together perfectly. A couple of nice features included were:
- Pins used to push down the existing buttons on the PCB
- Reuse of the existing speaker grill to hide and protect the speakers
- Sticker designed and installed on the top face
- Access to the charging port, SD card slot, USB and aux in jack on the back face
After machining all the components, final assembly was carried out. The pins to press the buttons needed some minor adjustment, but overall I was very happy the design. As a little cherry on top, I recorded all of the current employees farewell messages on to a USB stick, which would automatically play upon power up.
