Challenge: Cell phone networks face a significant issue with interference, particularly from Passive Intermodulation (PIM). PIM arises when harmonics of the Radio Frequency (RF) band used by cell base stations generate interference. These harmonics, often third, fifth, or seventh order, are commonly caused by metallic objects near cell antennas, acting as miniature resonators, such as rusty bolts, insecure brackets, and roof cladding.

Resolution: Addressing this problem head-on, Kaelus introduces the iVA Portable Antenna Analyzer—an advanced RF testing tool designed to simulate cell tower frequencies and analyze the actual RF transmission and reception. This innovative device facilitates the identification and pinpointing of faults related to PIM interference. Whether connected directly to the RF antenna and associated cabling or used with an external yagi directional antenna, the iVA enables real-time PIM source detection while the base station is in operation.

For external use, the Band Pass Amplifier (BPA) enhances fault-finding performance by connecting to the RF port, providing improved isolation for systems in the lower cell frequency range (700MHz) susceptible to greater interference during PIM investigations. However, combining the antenna, BPA, and iVA test equipment into a single solution can be cumbersome for technicians.

Introducing the Stormtrooper PIM Finder Handle: A solution born out of extensive ideation and iteration. This handle design streamlines the troubleshooting experience, allowing technicians to effortlessly mount the iVA and BPA units to the handle's underside using hook and loop straps. The antenna can then be easily installed at the front and secured using a captive hand screw.

Prototype: The design underwent prototyping using an easily machinable hard plastic (POM), enabling further refinement. Currently undergoing assessment by external agencies, this innovative solution is poised for release into the market, promising a more efficient and user-friendly approach to PIM interference detection in cell phone networks.

Solution: The Stormtrooper PIM Finder Handle. After much ideation and iteration, the handle design was settled on to allow for a much easier troubleshooting experience. The design allows the technician to easily mount the iVA and BPA units to the bottom of the handle using hook and loop straps. The antenna can then be installed in to the front and secured using a captive hand screw.

The design was prototyped using an easy to machine hard plastic (POM), which enable further refinement for the design. The solution is currently being assessed by external agencies for release in to the market.
